Plan - Updated August 2026
Preparing before you travel to New Zealand
This guide turns pre-departure planning into practical actions: documents to keep, items to pack, biosecurity risks to avoid, and what families should confirm before the student leaves home.

Answer first
Students should confirm their visa, provider, accommodation, insurance, money, documents, phone access and arrival plan before they travel.
This guide turns pre-departure planning into practical actions: documents to keep, items to pack, biosecurity risks to avoid, and what families should confirm before the student leaves home.
Start with your evidence file
Keep your passport, visa or eVisa details, enrolment confirmation, accommodation details, insurance information, emergency contacts and payment records in both digital and offline form. If your phone is lost or has no data at the airport, you still need access to essential documents.
Check travel and biosecurity rules
New Zealand has strict biosecurity and customs rules. Students should check official guidance before packing food, medicine, outdoor gear or animal and plant products. When unsure, declare the item rather than guessing.
Plan your first 24 hours
Before departure, know how you will leave the airport, where you will sleep on the first night, how you will contact family, and what to do if the flight is delayed. A calm arrival plan reduces stress after a long trip.
Family checklist
Parents and families should know the provider name, city, accommodation address, emergency contacts, insurance details and how the student will access money during the first week.
