Pathway Student Visa changes: what English students should know
Immigration New Zealand changed the Pathway Student Visa on 20 July 2026. The change may matter to some students who want to study English before another New Zealand qualification.
What changed?
The Pathway Student Visa now gives more flexibility for some study plans.
Immigration New Zealand says some eligible first-time Pathway Student Visa holders can spend up to 30 weeks studying English before starting their next qualification. This is an increase from 20 weeks.
The visa can also include more lower-level study pathways. This includes pathways that lead to, or move between, NZQCF levels 1 to 4, including English language study, foundation programmes and vocational certificates.
Who may be affected?
This may matter if you are planning to study more than one programme in New Zealand on a Pathway Student Visa.
It may be useful if your plan includes English study before another qualification.
It does not mean every English student can use this visa. Eligibility depends on the full Immigration New Zealand requirements.
The Pathway Student Visa is available only through participating Pathway Education Providers. This article does not say that WIE is a participating Pathway Education Provider.
